How Tattoo Removals Work

Remove that tattoo

After several years, that tattoo of your mom on a motorcycle doesn’t seem so hot. Perhaps you are a female preparing for a wedding and you don’t want the tattoo to show up on wedding photos. Whatever the reason may be, many people experience regret several years after getting their tattoos. Don’t worry; tattoos aren’t as permanent as they seem to be. There are tattoo removal methods that can renew your skin to its pre-tattoo state.

One kind of laser treatment breaks up the tattoo ink in the skin. The ink particles of the tattoo start to absorb the light from the laser and break up into tiny pieces. These pieces are then absorbed through the skin into the body’s natural cleansing system. It could take several weeks for this process to complete. Larger tattoos with more ink could need several treatments. A second kind of tattoo removal burns the skin using infrared light. The skin then scabs over. When the skin falls off, the ink will come off along with it. Laser treatment is safe and does not harm healthy skin cells. Laser treatment can cost anywhere from $250 - $850 per session. Up to 10 sessions may be needed.

With excision the skin is surgically removed. After the surgeon has removed the skin, the wound is closed with stitches. If excision is used on a larger tattoo, the surgeon may need to use skin from another part of the body to close the wound. Dermabrasion involves scraping the skin to remove the tattoo. The upper and middle layers of skin that contain tattoo ink are sanded down to remove that area of skin. Using the salabrasion method the area is rubbed aggressively with salt or a salt sanding block. These methods are very painful for the patient to undergo. They often leave permanent scarring in the area that the tattoo was removed.

There are some tattoo removal creams. Aside from claims by the manufacturer, there is no proof that these removal creams are effective in permanently removing tattoos. Perhaps you don’t wish to have your tattoo removed completely. There are also creams that work like makeup to cover up tattoos temporarily. Some people also choose to have a tattoo changed into something else. An experienced tattoo artist can change a tattoo so that no one ever knows what was underneath there.

Don’t think that you are stuck with that tattoo for the rest of your life. There are certainly methods of tattoo removal that will free you of the ink mistakes.
